Robert Griffin III Rumors: Cowboys, Eagles, Browns, Texans Options with Redskins Release?

The Washington Redskins are expected to release Robert Griffin III this offseason and if that happens, teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles could be interested in the quarterback.

Griffin's future in Washington has been up in the air since the team picked up his fifth year option and now it looks like the two sides are headed for a split. Griffin spent most of the season inactive as the third string quarterback behind Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy and now the team is prepared to move forward with Cousins as the starter. The team picked up the $16 million option on Griffin for this season, but according to NFL.com, the Redskins are not going to pay the quarterback that money.

Griffin did not get on the field this season and with Cousins hitting free agency, it's likely that the team will bring back Cousins on a long term deal and move on from Griffin. According to the Washington Post, general manager Scot McCloughan spoke about the quarterback situation, saying that the team wants to sign Cousins to a long term deal. McCloughan also said that the team is not in a rush to make a decision on RG3 and that he is a "good football player, he's a really good person, and he's under contract."

McCloughan is likely keeping coy about his plans, although the team could consider keeping Griffin if something unexpected happens with Cousins in free agency. Right now that is looking very unlikely and it appears that Griffin will be out of Washington for the 2016 season. Earlier in the season NFL.com reported that if Griffin became available, teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans and potentially the New Orleans Saints could be interested in signing him.

The Cowboys are looking to add depth at the quarterback position behind Tony Romo and if the team doesn't do it through the draft, Griffin could be an option. Todd Archer at ESPN Dallas speculates that Griffin (or Johnny Manziel) will not end up with the Cowboys, but reports have Griffin hoping to end up in Dallas and that could be an option for the team. The Browns are reportedly ready to move on from Johnny Manziel and the team could also consider Griffin as an option.

The Houston Texans used four different starters last season and could give Griffin a chance to win a job with the team as a starter or the backup for Brian Hoyer. The report about the Eagles came while Chip Kelly was still there, but Doug Pederson also could be interested in Griffin. Pederson had a mobile quarterback with Alex Smith in Kansas City and could look at Griffin as a similar option if Sam Bradford doesn't return.
