The NFL free agent class for 2016 has some notable names set to hit the market, including players like Travis Benjamin, Brock Osweiler, Marvin Jones, Matt Forte, Chris Ivory, LeGarrette Blount, Alshon Jeffery, Percy Harvin, Rishard Matthews and Lamar Miller.
The salary cap is expected to increase significantly this offseason and that could set up some teams to spend big on free agents. The running back position has a deep class of players headed towards free agency, including Matt Forte, Lamar Miller, Chris Ivory and Ronnie Hillman. Doug Martin is also heading towards free agency, but he is expected to remain with the Buccaneers and may not make it onto the open market.
The wide receiver position should get some attention, as players like Travis Benjamin, Marvin Jones, Alshon Jeffery, Percy Harvin, Rishard Matthews and James Jones could be targets for teams. Jeffery is expected to remain with the Bears, but if he somehow gets to the open market, there should be no shortage of suitors for his services. The Bears likely will not let that happen, but there is always a chance the two sides don't come to an agreement before free agency begins. The Bears can use the franchise tag on Jeffery and that could keep him off the open market if a deal is not reached.
Sam Bradford is headed towards free agency and he is the top player at the quarterback position ahead of names like Kirk Cousins, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brock Osweiler. Cousins is expected to remain with the Redskins and Fitzpatrick is expected to sign back with the Jets, leaving Bradford and Osweiler as the most likely targets for teams looking for free agent quarterbacks. The Eagles are expected to at least try and re-sign Bradford, but if that doesn't work out, teams like the Browns, 49ers and Texans could be interested in his services.
Osweiler is in an interesting position, as he showed during the season that he has the potential to be a solid starter in the NFL. The Broncos are not expected to bring back Peyton Manning next season and that makes keeping Osweiler a priority for Denver. If Osweiler hits the open market he could get some attention from teams, including the Cleveland Browns, who are expected to bring in a new starter for the 2016 season.
Peter King at the MMQB wrote in his column after the Super Bowl that he expects the Browns to at least check in on Osweiler this offseason in free agency. The Browns are reportedly going to move on from Johnny Manziel this offseason and that could open things up for a free agent like Bradford or Osweiler. The Browns are also expected to look at Jared Goff and Carson Wentz in the draft.
