Robert Griffin III Release Rumors: Cowboys, Broncos, Browns, LA Rams, Texans, Eagles Options If Cut By Redskins?

Robert Griffin III is expected to be released by the Washington Redskins this offseason after being the third string quarterback last season for the team. If Griffin is released, teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns, LA Rams, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles could be potential landing spots for the quarterback.

Griffin has a fifth year option for 2016 at over $16 million and with the Redskins planning to sign back Kirk Cousins on a new deal, it's unlikely the team also will want to pay RG3 that much. Griffin's deal will become fully guaranteed when the new league year begins on March 9, making it likely that the Redskins will make a move before that date. According to NFL.com, Griffin passed his exit physical with the team, which was the final "official hurdle" the team needed to clear if they eventually want to release Griffin.

Head coach Jay Gruden named Kirk Cousins the starter before the season over Griffin and that put Griffin's future in Washington completely up in the air. While the team has been coy about what they will do with Griffin, all signs point to the team cutting the quarterback. General manager Scot McCloughan spoke with the Washington Post about Griffin and the QB situation, saying that the team still has time to evaluate the position and make decisions.

The general consensus is that the Redskins will release Griffin, but McCloughan likes to play his cards close to the vest and likely does not want to give away his plans. The team still could try and trade Griffin, but with his option fully guaranteed at over $16 million, it's unlikely teams will want to give up much for that at this point. Griffin did not get on the field this past season and spent the year as the third strong option behind Cousins and Colt McCoy.

Cousins is hitting free agency and the Redskins want to sign him back long term, meaning there really is not much of a future for Griffin in Washington. NFL.com reported earlier in the season that if Griffin were released, teams like the Cowboys, Eagles and Texans could be interested in signing him. The Cowboys want a legitimate backup for Tony Romo, while the Eagles and Texans both could have new starters next season.

Griffin also could be an option for the Denver Broncos, as Mile High Sports reports that RG3 could be a fit if the team decides to let Brock Osweiler walk in free agency. Osweiler is expected to return, but if the money get "prohibitive to keep Osweiler, Benjamin Albright reports that the Broncos are "discussing the possibility" of RG3 at quarterback.
