Philadelphia Flyers Lose Claude Giroux To Injury

Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux missed Saturday's game for the team after suffering an injury against the Montreal Canadiens.

Giroux sat out Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs after dealing with an upper-body injury, according to the Flyers team website. General manager Ron Hextall said through the team release that Giroux is "day-to-day" and could miss some time with the injury. Giroux had not missed a game this season before sitting out against Toronto.

The team did not specify when Giroux was injured, but ESPN reported that it likely happened when the center was elbowed by P.K. Subban. Giroux was driving towards the net when he was elbowed high in the neck/chest area by Subban, and the hit knocked him down onto the ice. Giroux left the game and eventually returned for the final period and overtime, but the injury was clearly serious enough to keep him out on Saturday.

Giroux has been the most consistent player for the Flyers this season, and he is leading the team with 49 points, including 16 goals and 33 assists. Giroux had not missed a game since Jan. 3, 2015, against the Devils, and the Flyers are hoping that he can play against the Hurricanes on Tuesday. If Giroux missed that game, his next chance to play will be against the Coyotes on Thursday.

The Flyers are currently battling for a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference standings. The team is three points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card spot, and they are behind the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Panthers in the standings.
