Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo Leaning Towards Surgery

The Dallas Cowboys are lost without Tony Romo, so their offensive leader will apparently do anything in order to stay on the field for his team. The Cowboys starting quarterback has reportedly decided to have a procedure in which a part of his collarbone is shaved off or removed, according to CBSSports.com.

This operation is called the Mumford procedure and removes a portion of the distal clavicle. Even though Romo has not come out and told the Cowboys that this is happening, he is pretty certain it will need to occur so he can limit this type of injury in the future. Romo was said to have been debating whether or not to get a metal plate attached to his collarbone, but this seems to be the less intrusive procedure. Attaching the plate would end up causing more long term stress on his collarbone than the Mumford procedure.

The Mumford procedure is supposed to reduce the pain where the clavicle meet's the shoulder, making range of motion and his threshold for pain a bit higher. Romo is set to have surgery sometime in March and will only have a six to eight-week recovery period so he could return for the start of organized team activities in May. Romo suffered two fractured clavicles in 2015 at different times in the season, according to ESPN.GO.com. This would effectively end any talk of the Cowboys returning to compete for the Super Bowl, as those hopes are tied in with Romo's health.

The Cowboys Super Bowl hopes are so tied in with Romo's ability to play that analysts were predicting that the Cowboys draft Romo's heir apparent, NFL.com reported. However, they are still in win now mode and will most likely look to pick up the best defensive end available in the 2016 NFL Draft.
