Liverpool Transfer News: Rodgers Monitoring Alexis Sanchez; Lennon Says Samaras Will Not Move to Anfield

Liverpool are looking at the possibility of bringing in Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez.

The Chilean international has been a bit-part player this year, although his season has been disrupted due to injury.

Sanchez, however, is still down the pecking order in the Barca lineup, with Tito Vilanova choosing to play Lionel Messi in the "false 9" position in most games, and then preferring the fit-again David Villa, when he does opt to play with a central striker.

According to the Daily Express, Brendan Rodgers has asked his scouts to monitor Sanchez, before considering putting in a bid for the 23-year-old, who made a move from Udinese in 2011.

Barcelona are reluctant to sell the player, according to Mundo Deportivo, but would consider the possibility if a suitable offer was made.

The main stumbling block will be the transfer fee, with Barcelona expected to ask for a considerable amount if they agree to talk over a transfer fee, and with Liverpool now agreeing to tighten their purses after a few big-money disasters, the chances of Sanchez making a move to Anfield are highly unlikely.

Although, a loan move until the end of the season cannot be entirely ruled out.

Meanwhile, Celtic manager Neil Lennon has played down reports of a move for Giorgios Samaras to Liverpool.

Lennon feels the entire squad will remain at Celtic, after the Scottish champions made an incredible passage into the Champions League knockout rounds. Recent reports suggested Rodgers is considering a move for the Greek striker after being impressed by his performances this season.

"It's just speculation, someone taking a flyer," Lennon told reporters when questioned about Samaras' future. "I'm not sure if anyone will want to leave just now, the way things are going.

"Samaras has been a huge player for the club. He's been through a lot and has come out the other side and you can see what the fans think of him.

"I don't think he'd be wanting to leave in too much of a hurry. The fact we're through (to the Champions League last 16) is the difference."
