Arsenal Transfer News: Arsene Wenger Promised Big Transfer Budget, But Problems Continue as Fears Over Internal Rift Grow

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis apologized to the fans for Arsenal's humiliating defeat to League Two side Bradford City, but problems within the Gunners camp show no signs of abating with reports suggesting there is a rift growing between Arsene Wenger and his assistant Steve Bould.

Things went from bad to worse for Arsenal's stuttering season, when they were dumped out of the Capital One Cup by Bradford on penalties, after needing a last-gasp equalizer just to force the tie into extra time.

Gazidis speaking at a meeting with the Arsenal's Supporters Trust, said he was deeply saddened and angered at Arsenal's exit from the League Cup. "I am frankly tired of getting up here and delivering the same message," he said. "Last night was not good enough and it made us all upset and angry.

"I would like to apologise to all of you, especially the fans who travelled up there. It was unbelievable support, as ever, and you deserved better.

"We all work here and are desperate to deliver the success and trophies we all want. Look into the eyes of the staff here, look at the way they talk. We will get this right. That is something we will work hard to put right."

Wenger has been promised a considerable transfer budget in the transfer window with majority owner Stan Kroenke asking the manager to bring in the reinforcements needed to change Arsenal's fortunes around.

However, before Wenger can buy any player in January, Arsenal face a tough set of fixtures in the next couple of weeks, and matters have not been helped by reports suggesting the Frenchman's relationship with Bould has fractured.

Bould was only appointed Wenger's assistant at the beginning of the season following Pat Rice's retirement, and the former Arsenal defender is reportedly upset with the fact that he has not been given any authority over first team matters as well as training sessions.

It is understood, Bould was given charge of the Arsenal defense at the beginning of the season, but has off late been restricted from implementing any sort of drills during training.

"There does not seem to be much communication between the two," a source told the Daily Mirror. "It is a shame because all the players are behind Wenger despite the results but equally, they all respect Bould. Things are strained.

"Bould worked with the defence before the start of the season but he has not done too many sessions since. Wenger remains in complete control over everything.

Some of the players have also been reportedly disillusioned with Wenger's tactics, as he keeps playing people out of position, notably Gervinho as a center forward and Aaron Ramsey down the right.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has made sure his No.2 is not just a yes man, which Wenger likes to appoint because he has a massive ego, because he's a dictator. He's not allowing Bould to do any work," former Arsenal player Stewart Robson said.

"He's got a reputation for developing players. Maybe he did that six or seven years ago. He's actually putting players backwards now.

"I've seen Gervinho play for the Ivory Coast before he came to Arsenal, he was a good player. I saw (Andrey) Arshavin play for Russia and Zenit St Petersburg, he was a good player. I've seen (Aaron) Ramsey play for the Welsh Under-21s, he's a good player."

Arsenal legend Ian Wright does not believe Wenger needs to resign, but agreed with Robson when it comes to giving Bould a freer reign.

"I wouldn't like to see him go, I'd like to see him bring people in that he's going to listen to," Wright told Absolute Radio's Rock 'N' Roll Football Show.

"I don't feel that Steve Bould is getting as much of a hand on the steering wheel as people think.

"That team doesn't look to me like a team that is doing any defensive work at all."
