Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, after agreeing a deal for Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge, is looking to bolster his attacking options further by bidding for Wigan forward Franco Di Santo.
Di Santo is a former Chelsea player, and Rodgers is well aware of the Argentinian's talents having worked with him at Stamford Bridge.
With the 23-year-old's contract set to expire in the summer, Liverpool are confident Wigan will be forced to sell if a desirable bid was made.
While Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has publicly reiterated his desire to keep hold off his player, according to the Mirror, the club have consigned themselves to the fact that the Argentine could leave for free in the summer, and therefore a sale in January would make sense.
Rodgers, despite as good as sealing the signing of Sturridge, is on the lookout for further reinforcements to his forward line, with Blackpool's Thomas Ince still a top target, and with Di Santo capable of playing in the hole behind the striker, the Liverpool manager would welcome his addition.
Another player that Liverpool are being linked with is highly-rated goalkeeper Jack Butland. With Birmingham City's finances in disarray, Liverpool are keen to take advantage and make a bid for the 19-year-old.
Almost all of the big clubs in the English Premier League are keen on Butland, and Liverpool are desperate to beat out the competition from the rest of the pack by making an early bid in January.
Birmingham are trying to inject some cash into the club by manufacturing a takeover, but talks with two Hong Kong consortiums and ex-QPR chairman Gianni Paladini have broken down, leading to suggestions the club would be forced to sell one of their biggest assets.
"We need to ensure that we do not go in to administration by raising some funds," Birmingham chief Peter Panno was quoted as saying by the Mirror.
"It may be the case that further disposal will have to be made to maintain the cash flow."
If Liverpool were to complete the signing of Butland in January, that would open up the possibility of Pepe Reina moving on to Arsenal, who have been tracking the goalkeeper for a couple of years.
