"For Longmeadow shot putter Abbie Mokwuah, success is nothing new. The senior entered the All-State meet at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletics Center Sunday coming off of a State Division IV championship title, which only added to a long list of accolades.nnBut as she approached Sundayu2019s meet, Mokwuah just wanted to shake off memories of her 14th place finish at All-States a year ago, when she fouled multiple times.nn"I was just thinking, u2018As long as itu2019s better than last year,u2019u201d Mokwuah said. u201cI think I was a lot less nervous than I was last year though. Last year I definitely let the nerves take over, but this year I think I was a little bit more settled.u201dnnMokwuah settled in for a first-place finish this year, winning the All-State title with a throw of 41u2019 4.75u2019u2019. It was more than a foot longer than the next competitor, and gave Mokwuah a nice moment on top of the podium after the victory.nnu201cI wasnu2019t sure what to expect going into the season, I wasnu2019t sure what the goal was, but Iu2019m definitely happy right now,u201d Mokwuah said.nnMokwuah said it took her until her fifth throw to reach her best distance on the day, though it was not her best throw of the season. She threw 43u2019 8u2019u2019 earlier in the year, and even hit 43u2019 6.75u2019u2019 in last weeku2019s state divisional championship.nnMokwuah said she will be looking to hit 43u2019 8u2019u2019 or even 44 feet with a throw before the season ends. She has two more chances to do it u2014 the New England Championships next week and at New Balance Nationals Indoor later in the season.nnu201cI think a lot of it is mental preparation in practice, thinking u2014 almost imagining youu2019re at the meet definitely helps,u201d Mokwuah said. u201cAnd then just trying to practice hard every day and get the most out of every practice when you only have a few left.nnNik Smith takes first in 300-meter dash, second in 55-meter dashnnThere was no doubt that Nikolas Smith would be a top competitor in two events at the All-State meet. He was seeded second in the 55-meter dash and fourth in the 300-meter dash.nnSmith finished exactly where he was seeded in the 55-meter dash, falling to Miltonu2019s Smith Charles by two hundredths of a second with a time of 6.46 seconds. But in the 300-meter dash, Smith turned on the jets.nnHe had his best race of the season, finishing with 34.50 seconds and winning the All-State title.nnu201cI thought really what it was was that I really knew my position and I had a really solid plan of how to run a race before I got there,u201d Smith said. u201cI knew that throughout the season, I hadnu2019t had the best competition throughout, so I knew I was going to have to finish the race with someone that close to me.u201dnnSmith said he used No. 1 seed Ricky Francois from Brighton to help pace himself, and then kicked past him after the break in the track. He pushed himself so hard in the race that he even puked afterward.nnu201cOh yeah, he was in the basket,u201d Northampton coach Brandon Palmer said. u201cI was having a little fun with that. That was the first time he has had to empty the tank like that all season, so something like that u2014 when you see that as a coach, you know your athlete is giving it their all.u201dnnSmith will be competing in the 200-meter dash championship and the sprint medley at New Balance Nationals Indoor after the New England Championships next week.nnNik in finals! pic.twitter.com/4pAffCVpZR u2014 HampXCTF (@northamptonxctf) February 26, 2017nnMinnechaugu2019s Kyla Hill, Grace Pettengill each place fourth"
