Arsenal vs Manchester City: Preview, Injuries, Team News, Predictions and Expected Lineups

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott will have the opportunity to announce his arrival as a central striker when he laces up his boots to play Manchester City in Sunday's English Premier League game at the Emirates.

Every time that the 23-year-old has played for the Gunners up front in a central role, he has looked convincing. The ultimate test will come Sunday against the Premier League champions who have the likes of Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta and Matija Nastasic in their ranks.

The game is not just about Walcott though. It holds so many other variables. City can possibly close the gap on leaders Manchester United, depending on the result at Old Trafford against Liverpool. Arsenal can show their own credentials with a win, and put pressure on the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham.

Every Arsenal fan would have liked this game to have been another match towards a run for the Premier League title. Instead, it is going to be a test of character of the team and their desire and indeed capabilities to perform against a title-challenging side.

Last year, in the corresponding fixture, Mikel Arteta scored a belter to give Arsenal a 1-0 victory. In the game at the Etihad earlier this season, the Gunners completely outplayed the champions, but needed a late equalizer to salvage a 1-1 draw.

City have not won at Arsenal's home ground for over 30 years, and have gone goalless in their last five. All those statistics bode well for the Gunners, but the champions are made of steel and have built the uncanny knack of winning games even while not being at their best, something Arsenal were good at a few years back, and something United do time and again.

City are crippled by injuries and absentees, though, with Sergio Aguero ruled out with a hamstring problem and the Toure brothers - Yaya and Kolo - on Africa Cup of Nations duty. One of Arsenal's least liked former players Samir Nasri also misses the game through suspension.

Arsenal do not have too many problems on the injury front, with Olivier Giroud set to take a late fitness test after picking up a knock on his knee in the FA Cup match against Swansea last week. Abou Diaby should make a return providing another option for Wenger in the middle of the park.

Even if a lot of eyes will be on Walcott, for many, the game will be about two Spanish playmakers, who have lit up the English game ever since making their way from Spain.

David Silva and Santi Cazorla, at their best, are an absolute joy to watch. Silva is the string-puller for City, the man who makes Roberto Mancini's men tick.

Cazorla is the main man for Arsenal when it comes to opening up defences, and playing through those defense-splitting balls.

City, though, will miss their driving force in midfield, Yaya Toure. Without the Ivorian's power, Arsenal, who can be a little lightweight at times, can take advantage.

Jack Wilshere is still not at his best, but that is only expected after missing nearly 17 months through injury. The diminutive Englishman is a player who wears his heart on his sleeve; when the team hurts, he does; when the fans wants something special, he is the most prominent one looking to oblige.

As is the case in the modern game nowadays, the match will be won or lost in midfield, which is why the likes of Gareth Barry for City and Mikel Arteta for Arsenal will play a key role for their sides.

Pound-for-pound, Arsenal can match City, especially with the absences. The team that steps up to the plate and takes their opportunities will come out of the match with a big smile on their faces.

Expected lineups: Arsenal: Szczesny; Gibbs, Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Sagna; Arteta, Wilshere; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cazorla, Podolski; Walcott.

Manchester City: Hart; Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy; Barry, Garcia; Milner, Silva, Tevez; Dzeko.

Prediction: 1-1
