Light Falls On Wrestler During High School Match Causing Head Injury, How Bad Was The Athlete Hurt? (VIDEO)

High school wrestling can be intense for students as they compete against other athletes their age. Things are hard enough when matching up against a tough opponent, but one high schooler faced off against an even bigger challenge last week when a light fell down on him during a competition.

According to ABC affiliate KSFY, South Dakota, Madison High School wrestler Michael McComish was competing in a match on Friday against Chamberlain High when an 80-pound spotlight fell on him. McComish and his parents were stunned at the development, but amazingly, he did not sustain any serious injuries.

CHECK out the VIDEO of the fall HERE. It's crazy.

On Twitter as @Comish69, he wrote, "Just letting everyone know I'm fine! Stitches in my head. Gash on forehead and back of me head and little cuts from the glass nothin serious."

"It was really strange. After a couple of seconds, I kind of realized that's what it was. At first, I said to myself 'what just hit me?' it was really bright. I noticed all the glass. I was like, ok, this isn't good," senior wrestler Michael McComish to KSFY.

The event, which takes place in Madison, South Dakota, is known as "Madison Square Garden". According to Deadspin.com, it "features an amazing ambiance, complete with loud music, dimmed lights and glow sticks. It has a giant spotlight focuses on the combatants while loud music blares."

The video is a bit scary, as it shows McComish coming to the center of the wrestling mat to prepare to compete, when suddenly the light comes crashing down directly on top of him. Right after, the video shows his opponent and the referee jump back in shock before rushing to help free him.

"It zipped down right square on top of him," Onlooker and former Madison Junior High principal Dale Waba told the Daily Leader. "There was no part of his body you could see. I thought he got burned. I have never seen anything like this at all, and I have attended all of these matches."

"The unfortunate accident that occurred on Friday, January 18 was indeed a scary moment for everyone involved," the school district wrote in a statement Monday, according to KSFY. "We are thankful to report that the student/athlete injured is recovering and is in school today."

McComish said he suffered only some bruising and a cut to the head as a result of the light falling. He was tended to by medical professionals quickly, who found that no serious injuries had occurred. The most serious thing he needed was stitches for the gash on his head.

McComish Tweeted a photo of his head after he got it treated on Monday.

His mother, Heather Bergheim told the Madison Daily Leader: 'We are very thankful it was not more serious. We are hoping for the best and taking it just one day at a time.'
