Since being named starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Colin Kaepernick has continued to grab headlines as his celebrity continues to grow. With the Super Bowl just days away, the 49ers star needs to stay focused without any distractions, but with Kaepernick's biological mother trying to reach out to her son, staying focus may pose a big challenge.
Heidi Russo spoke with FOX31 Denver last week about her son, her attempts to reach out to him, and her decision to give him for adoption when she was 19-years-old.
"I knew I couldn't have provided my son the kind of life he deserved when I became pregnant," Russo told FOX31. "I had him for about six weeks before putting him up for adoption, and what a blessing it was to have Teresa and Rick Kaepernick be able to step up and raise Colin."
Russo says she's kept in contact with the Kaepernick's from the start, but has never spoken with Colin over the phone or even met him in person. She claims to have tried to contact him multiple times online, but says many of her messages went unanswered.
She emphasized that her attempt to meet her son now has nothing to do with his new-found celebrity.
"Don't get me wrong, I am not 'coming out' to share in any of the success Colin is having, I just want him to know I never stopped thinking about him," Russo told the station. "For my family, we will just be cheering for Colin just as loud as the Kaepernicks will be, come Super Bowl."
