The previous meeting between the sides came all the way back in August. It ended in a scoreless draw as the Arsenal offense was still developing chemistry after several major offseason changes. Defense-first Stoke was willing to accept their second of a now league-leading 12 draws.
Arsenal managed to avoid an embarrassment against Liverpool last week as they came back from 2 goals down to end the match 2-2. The team is currently in 6th place with 38 points on the board, 4 points behind Spurs and 3 points behind 5th placed Everton.
Arsenal have been terrific in the second half of the games recently and if they can replicate that in the first half also, 3 points is up for the grabs.
Meanwhile Stoke City are in a pretty decent form lately. Standing at 10th place in the table, they have just lost 1 in the last 5 games, drawing 2 and winning the other 2.
Asmir Begovic remains one of the league's most underrated goalkeepers, but the back line hasn't been nearly as reliable over the past month. It's led to a lot more matches with three and four goals against instead of clean sheets.
The 25-year-old Bosnian star, who became popular transfer fodder during January, possesses terrific athleticism, leading to numerous highlight-reel saves. But there's only so much he can do if he's not getting support from his defense.
Begovic can expect another heavy workload on Saturday with the Gunners desperate for three points. Stoke needs him to step up.
Expected Lineups:
Arsenal: Szczesny; Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Santos; Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla, Walcott; Podolski, Giroud.
Stoke: Begovic; Cameron, Shawcross, Huth; Whitehead, Whelan, Nzonzi, Adam, Etherington; Walters, Jones.
