It's almost like hitting 500 home runs in baseball, but even more exclusive. Sylvia Hatchell won her 900th game as a head coach as the North Carolina Tar Heels defeated Boston College on Thursday evening. She plans on thanking everybody who helped her get to this plateau by sending them 900 Hershey's Kisses?
There's nothing like sweets after a meal, but 900 Kisses are a lot to store. Maybe it's just the easiest and most inexpensive way for Hatchell to thank everybody who helped her get to this point?
After the victory, Hatchell noted that everybody who was a mentor in her long ride as a head coach was still alive and she wanted to take this opportunity to thank them.
Hatchell has been coaching since 1970 when she was coaching at Francis Marion in South Carolina. While there, she was a multitasker doing a little bit of teaching and at some point even looking over the cheerleading squad.
Hatchell has been successful wherever she's stepped foot. In 11 seasons with Francis Marion she won to championships an AIAW in 1982 and NAIA Championship in 1986.
After going to the Tar Heels, she captured the NCAA Championship in 1994, has guided the team to eight ACC regular-season titles, and they won the league tournament eight times under her.
Pat Summet, Tennessee Volunteers coaching legend who recently retired, only had great things to say about Hatchell. "Sylvia has been one of the great ambassadors of the women's game, and it is so pleasing to see her reach the 900-win milestone in her career. I wish her all the best as she continues to build on her truly amazing career!"
Next on the list for 900 wins is Rutgers Scarlet Knights' head coach C. Vivian Stringer. She is currently sitting on 898 career wins.
