Free agent first baseman Jason Giambi signed a minor league deal Saturday with the Cleveland Indians after being invited to the team's spring training with a chance to make the season-opening roster.
The Indians announced the signing Saturday, six days ahead of the team's first full-squad workout.
If he makes the team, Giambi could see time at designated hitter.
Giambi, 42, interviewed for the Colorado Rockies' managerial job after last season, then discussed the hitting coach job with the team. In end, the Rockies hired Walt Weiss as manager and Dante Bichette as hitting coach, so Giambi apparently will continue his playing career.
A five-time All-Star, Giambi played seven years in Oakland before he signed a seven-year, $120 million free agent deal with the New York Yankees. He was largely productive during his time in the Bronx, though he had several seasons cut short due to injuries. Giambi admitted during the BALCO scandal that he had used performance-enhancing substances.
Giambi returned to the A's as a free agent before the 2009 season, but he was released that August. He signed with the Rockies a few weeks later.
In his 18 seasons, Giambi has a .280 batting average, a .403 on-base percentage, a .522 slugging percentage, 429 homers and 1,405 RBI.
