The most highly-anticipated Champions League tie will come forth when Manchester United travel to Real Madrid in the first leg of the round of 16.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be the cynosure as the Portuguese superstar looks to get one over his former side, with the return leg at Old Trafford promising to be an even more mouth-watering fixture.

Real will probably start the slight favorites at the Bernabeu, owing largely to the fact that they have the ace in the pack in Ronaldo.

However, Ronaldo's mentor Sir Alex Ferguson believes United are fully capable of toppling the Spanish giants.

"I think it's a good time for us to be playing Real Madrid," Ferguson said. "We have a fantastic lead in our league and we have everyone fit. When you come to this part of the season you (generally) have two or three players injured. We don't have that, which is a bonus.

"We're ready for tomorrow (Wednesday). Since the Champions League started, almost every year we have played one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"When I started as a coach many years ago, I dreamt I'd be playing against the top teams as a manager and you get the opportunity to do that in the Champions League on a regular basis.

"There is a special significance when you play the big teams and you'll see that tomorrow. It's just a shame we and Real are meeting this early. I wish it had been at Wembley, in the final."

With both teams having an envious attacking lineup, Ferguson expects a few goals.

"It won't be 0-0 tomorrow night, I can assure you of that. This match can live up to expectations. History always plays a part in this type of game, as does the two teams' desire to go forward.

"Real Madrid are one of the best counter-attacking teams in Europe. Their speed from box to box is fantastic. But we have to play our own game too. Our intention is to win and to score."

Real manager Jose Mourinho, who said this is the match the world has been waiting for, believes this is the kind of tie that every player wants to be involved in.

"We all enjoy these big matches," the Portuguese said. "Every player wants to play (in them). I could feel today that some players were a bit frustrated because they won't be starting tomorrow. The ones who will start are not anxious. They have what they want, which is to play in a big match.

"We all want to play against big teams, big coaches and big players and Manchester United represent all of that.

"I've had great players and Cristiano Ronaldo isn't more special than others in my heart. If we are talking about football, though, he is a player from another planet."

Real Madrid will be without Iker Casillas, who is recovering from a broken thumb, while Rafael Varane is a doubt.

United have pretty much a full squad to choose from, with Paul Scholes being the only player who has not travelled because of a knee injury. There were concerns about the fitness of Jonny Evans and Phil Jones, but both have made the 22-man squad.
