A racing yacht that has docked in San Francisco has set a new record according to boat organizers as the fastest passage of a single-hulled sailing vessel from New York to San Francisco.
According to the Associated Press, the 70-foot yacht named Maserati sailed into San Francisco under the famous Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday morning, finishing its trip at Pier 39 Marina around 11:30 a.m. The boat finished its journey after leaving from New York City 47 days ago, according to Judy Laws, a spokeswoman for the event.
The boat took one of the toughest routes in the world, sailing from New York City around Cape Horn all the way at the bottom of South America. The trek is 13,225-miles and is considered by many to be one of the toughest trips in the world.
The report says that the boat finished the trip in 47 days, 2 hours and 33 minutes, well ahead of the most recent record of 57 days, 3 hours and 2 minutes set in 1998, according to Laws.
"They beat it by a little more than 10 days. They smashed it," Laws said.
The crew of the boat had eight members and was captained by Italian skipper Giovanni Soldini, who took off from New York City on New Year's Eve. The boat originally was expected to arrive earlier but was delayed by winds on Friay.
"This is a big deal," Andy Turpin, managing editor of Latitude 38, the Marin County-based sailing magazine, told the San Francisco Chronicle earlier this week. "This is one of the most difficult sailing records."
