The New York Islanders and the Philadelphia Flyers both have the same number of points this season, but currently they seem to be headed in opposite directions with their seasons. The Islanders have won two in a row against big division rivals, while Philadephia has dropped three of their last four games. The two face-off Monday in New York, where the Flyers have won six straight and 13 of 14.
The Flyers have been having big problems on the road this season. On a six-game roadtrip, they have dropped three of four games. No other team in the league has more than five road losses. Philadelphia has given up an average of 3.5 goals in road games which could hurt them Monday. Their lack of production on the road has caused them to fall to a 2.2 goals per game average while playing away. Team captain Clause Giroux is off to a rough start, only having 10 points through 16 games. He led the league last year in points with 93.
The Islanders are on a completely different path right now. While they are tied for last in their division, they have momentum right now, managing nine goals in their last two games. Prior to the two previous wins, the Islanders had lost five in a row in regulation. Matt Moulson is on a hot streak, having scored a goal, earned three assists and seven points in the past three games. Brad Boyes also has five points over the past four games.
The Islanders are going into the game with no significant injuries, while the Flyers are still without Scott Hartnell (foot) and Andrej Meszaros (shoulder). Both teams need to turn their seasons up if they have any hope of getting into the playoffs. The Islanders seem currently more capable of doing that than the Flyers.
