The 2013 NFL Scouting Combine begins Saturday, Feb. 23 and will run through Tuesday, Feb. 26. The combine will include a number of drills used to test the physical capabilities of college players looking to make that leap into the pros.
In years past, NFL hopefuls have either improved or hurt their draft stock as a result of their performances.
Here's a list of those with the best numbers and times during the scouting-combine drill, making them the all-time leaders at the NFL combine.
40-Yard Dash
Chris Johnson (4.24 seconds), RB, 2008:
Johnson is arguably the fastest player to ever play in the NFL. His speed even brought up comparisons to that of the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt. Johnson turned his world-class speed at the combine into 6,888 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns in the NFL, including a 2,000-yard season in 2009.
Bench Press
Justin Ernest (51 reps), DT, 1999:
Ernest represents why the NFL combine is not a guarantee to having a successful career. Despite putting a record 51 reps of 225 pounds, Ernest never played a game in the NFL.
Vertical Jump
Gerald Sansabaugh (46.0 inches), S, 2005:
Sensabaugh spent eight seasons in the NFL, four ofwhich were spent with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the last four with the Dallas Cowboys. He has 411 career tackles and 14 interceptions.
Broad Jump
Justin Fargas (11'5"), RB, 2011:
Fargas' performance at the combine earned him a third round draft selection by the Oakland Raiders. In his seven seasons with the Raiders he racked up over 3,900 total yards and 10 touchdowns in 92 career games.
Scott Starks (11'5"), CB, 2005:
Starks spent five seasons in Jacksonville from 2005-09. He intercepted two passes and made 73 tackles over 54 career games.
3-Cone Drill
Jeff Maehl (6.42 seconds), WR, 2011:
Maehl went undrafted in 2011 but managed to sign and play three games for the Houston Texans. He failed to catch an NFL pass.
20-Yard Shuttle
Jason Allen (3.83 seconds), CB, 2006:
Allen found himself drafted in the first round by the Miami Dolphins in 2006. He spent five seasons with the Dolphins before making his way to the Houston Texans. He played sparingly for the Bengals in 2012.
60-Yard Shuttle
Buster Skrine (10.75 seconds), CB, 2011:
A fifth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns, Skrine has appeared in 32 games (six starts) since 2011. He has 13 passes defensed and one interception.
Jamell Fleming (10.75 seconds), CB, 2012:
The Cardinals took Fleming in the third round of the 2012 draft. In 15 games and three starts last season, Fleming made 23 tackles and defended one pass.
