Andy Reid, head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, stated he's willing to listen to trade offers for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. Though no harmcomes from listening to offers, it simply doesn't make much sense for the worse team in the league to even think about giving up the first pick or does it? Reid has specific plans with the No. 1 pick and has his reasons for listening.
The Chiefs are rebuilding and they need to pick up young and talented players. Like many teams, Reid would love to start from the quarterback position. However, unlike 2012 where the draft featured super talents like Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III and surprising guys like Russell Wilson, Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden, 2013 doesn't boast a quarterback talent that is really taking No. 1 in the draft.
So what are Reid's plans?
Well the obvious one is to draft a player, of course. He can get a great player and then trade him for a quarterback, if that's what he likes. Reid can also draft a player, keep him, hope they play horribly again in 2013 and have Johnny Manziel opt out of college and joining the NFL. This would allow Reid to get a franchise quarterback.
That's not really a logical approach. So, since Reid is unimpressed by the quarterback talent in the draft this year, he's not entirely making the No. 1 overall pick available, but if somebody makes a crazy good offer, then Reid would consider giving up the pick.
Reid knows the importance of a top pick in the NFL draft. "It's a pretty valuable pick," Reid said, which makes it possible for teams to give up a lot for the No. 1 pick.
As of right now, Luke Joeckel looks to be the guy the Chiefs are eyeing, but he doesn't directly produce offense. Joeckel, of Texas A&M, is a left tackle and he would fill a great need for the Chiefs.
Reid has experience picking and distinguishing top draft talent as he chose Dovovan McNabb in 1999 as the Philadelphia Eagles held the No. 2 spot in the draft. We saw how that pick turned out, so it seems like Reid is trustworthy when picking the right talent.
The 2013 NFL Draft is scheduled to take place from Apr. 25-27.
