Another page in the story of the New York Jets starting quarterback spot has just been written. The team is beginning to look desperate to create some sort of quarterback competition. With fans unhappy with current starter Mark Sanchez, the Jets have to look invested in the position. The New York Daily News is reporting that the Jets have shown interest in David Garrard, bringing him in to workout in front of team officials.
Garrard is an upcoming free agent. He has not appeared in an NFL game since the 2010 season when he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He eventually became the backup quarterback to Blaine Gabbert who the team drafted in 2011. He was then signed by the Miami Dolphins to create some quarterback competition with rookie Ryan Tannehill, but was released by the team prior to Week 1. Matt Moore become the eventual backup to Tannehill.
Garrard has had some mild success while playing in the NFL. He has completed 61.6 percent of his passes throughout his career. He has thrown 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions. His career quarterback rating is 85.8. But, he has not seen playing time since 2010. Can the Jets trust him to perform on the field again?
The Jets are doing all that they can to find a quarterback that works with the team and create some success at the position. Current starter Sanchez has been inconsistent and needs a decent backup to make him compete for the role. The team brought in Tim Tebow last season in hopes to push Sanchez. Neither Tebow nor Sanchez ended up benefiting from the experiment. Sanchez threw just 13 touchdowns in 15 games last season. Tebow is now on his way out of New York.
It was reported earlier that the Jets are also looking at bringing in Brady Quinn, an upcoming free agent quarterback from Kansas City. The team wants to bring five quarterbacks to training camp. They have three spots filled, so Garrard and Quinn could fill the final two spots. As relatively inactive backups, the Jets could sign them for pretty cheap. However, neither Quinn nor Garrard have the talent to really challenge Sanchez.
