The ultimate nightmare for a Jets fan has nothing to do with their starting quarterback drama. The worst fear would be losing cornerback Darrelle Revis to the New England Patriots. With the possibility of Revis being traded getting more real by the minute, Jets fans must prepare for any possible landing spot. NFL sources say the possibility of Revis being traded to the Jets is very real and could happen.
The Jets management and Revis have been on two separate pages when it comes to the future of their star cornerback. Revis is looking for a new contract and the Jets have been coy when it comes to negotiations. They most recently have been said to be shopping Revis to other teams during the NFL Combine.
It would be very unlike the Patriots to sign such a big named free agent, but the team could use a big shutdown cornerback on defense. Tom Brady just restructured his contract that freed up cap space for the team. They would assumedly have enough money to sign Revis to a contract that he desires.
If Revis is forced to play out the final year in his four-year, $46 million contract, he would earn $6 million this season. Revis is coming off of ACL surgery and recovery. If he proves to be in perfect health and has a great season, he will draw high attention come free agency next season. If the Jets let him walk, signing with the Patriots would be the ultimate way for Revis to stick it to the Jets ownership.
The Jets would never trade Revis to the Patriots. Their biggest rival in the league getting one of their best players through trading would never happen. But as Revis nears free agency, he will have the ability to sign with whatever team offers him the best contract.
The Patriots have not had a big cornerback since Ty Law. They have ranked as one of the worst pass defenses in the league for the past three years. There is no question they could use Revis and his ability to cover big receivers. The Jets negotiated away the right to use their franchise tag on Revis, so they would unable to hold on to him after this season if a deal is not reached.
