Korea just made things interesting Pool B after defeating Australia 6-0 in the first round of World Baseball Classic action in Taiwan. Thanks to great pitching from Seung Song and a trio of heavy hitting Lees, Korea cruised to victory on Monday and remained alive in the the WBC.
Song pitched four innings of two-hit ball while surrender two walks and recording five strikeouts. The entire pitching staff handled their business as they gave up a total of six hits while striking out 12 batters.
As far as their offense, Yongkyu, Seung Yuop and Dae Jo Lee combined for eight of the Korean 11 hits also scoring four of their six runs. Yongkyu, the leadoff hitter and centerfielder, went 2-3 with two walks. Seung Yuop, the first baseman and third-place hitter went 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Dae Ho, the DH and clean-up had three hits with one RBI, one run and a walk.
With the victory, Korea ensures they can play another day, though they don't control their own destiny. They are 1-1, but the Netherlands are also 1-1. The Netherlands defeated Korea in their first matchup of the WBC.
Next up for Korea, they face the undefeated Chinese Taipei on Tuesday, March 5 as they will close out the action in Pool B's round robin.
