NFL Rumors: Steven Jackson Top Target for Atlanta Falcons? Team is Focused on Adding New Running Back

With the Atlanta Falcons having cleared almost $16 million in salary cap space, they can now afford to look at free agents on the market that could potentially help the team. The Falcons came within one game of the Super Bowl last season and have high hopes to return next year. The team released three veterans on Friday in hopes of getting some youth and talent in return. Running back Michael Turner was among those released and now the team is reportedly setting all focus on getting running back Steven Jackson in free agency.

The Falcons finished 29th in the league in rushing last season and now officially have an open spot on the roster for a new back. Jackson has reportedly chosen to void his contract with the St. Louis Rams, making him the top back on the free agent market. Jackson has over 10,000 career rushing yards, with eight straight seasons of 1,000 yards or more. He could be the necessary upgrade the Falcons need.

Reasoning behind Turner's release was not made known, but he reportedly failed a physical with the team. Running back Jacquizz Rodgers was named the starting running back for the final couple games of last season and after Turner aggravated an old ankle injury in the NFC Championship causing him to limp off the field, his fate with the team was all but sealed.

Turner delivered one of the worst seasons of his career in 2012, totaling only 800 yards and 3.6 yards per carry. Matt Ryan has turned Atlanta's offense into one of the best passing units in the league, but they need balance with the run game.

Atlanta does not need a super star, just someone who can share the load with Rodgers. In 2012, Jackson rushed for 1,042 yards for 4.1 yards per carry. He also had 38 receptions for 321 yards. He has proved to be a versatile back that will bring seven years of experience to Atlanta.

The Falcons easily have enough money to offer Jackson a worthy contract. He could easily step in and make a difference immediately while Rodgers is maturing into his third year in the league. Jackson will draw a lot of attention once free agency begins, so if Atlanta wants to make a move, they will have to act fast.
