With all the trade talks surrounding New York Jets' cornerback, it has been forgotten that he is recovering from season-ending surgery to repair an ACL injury. With every media outlet anxious to find out the latest development with his future in New York, not much has come out about where he stands health wise. Jets general manager John Idzik took time to deliver an upbeat medical report on Revis, saying the cornerback is ahead of schedule and the team is excited to have him back.
Idzik held a 30-miunute conversation with season-ticket holders to address the most talked about player on team this offseason. The GM remained tight-lipped on any trade rumors, dodging multiple questions in regards to the current situation. He did however say Revis was healthy and doctors continue to report good news to the team.
"By all accounts, by his doctors' accounts, he's doing very well. By our estimation, he's ahead of schedule," Idzik said.
Idzik has never confirmed trade rumors with Revis, but he has also never done anything to shoot the down. After multiple reports surfaced that Idzik and the Jets front office were shopping Revis to teams during the NFL combine, he claimed Monday to be excited to get Revis back from injury.
"So we're anxious to get him back, anxious to get him back in the building, get him back with his teammates and have him help us-help us not only on the field, but in the building with his approach. We're very fortunate to have a player like Darrelle Revis on our team," Idzik said.
By the sound of it, Idzik wants Revis to remain with the Jets. However, owner Woody Johnson is concerned with team's ability to re-sign Revis at a price that makes both parties happy. Revis is due to make $6 million in the final year of his contract. The Jets cannot use the franchise tag on Revis, so if they are unable to re-sign or trade him, he will become a free agent next year. Revis is reportedly seeking $16 million per year in a new contract, which leaves the Jets with a decision to make. Idzik says he is just concerned on Revis' health right now.
"Our focus is purely on getting him better. He sustained a pretty significant injury, and he's busting his tail on his rehab. We're monitoring that closely," Idzik said.
Idzik is also standing firm in his statement that any talk around Revis is rumors and only rumors.
"I will stand firm by saying there was no truth to the trade speculation," Idzik said.
