The San Francisco 49ers have been the main team in discussions to get cornerback Darrelle Revis in a trade. While the New York Jets seem to be determined to secretly pawn him off to another team, the 49ers may not be as interested as previously reported. According to NFL league sources, are less inclined to pursue Revis because they believe the asking price is too high.
According to a source, the 49ers interest in Revis is ".001 on a scale of 1-10." Other team officials have come out and said the team does not intend on trying to trade for him. These reports are conflicting to the ones saying the team has engaged with the New York Jets in working out a possible trade for the All-Pro cornerback. Revis himself has said he would enjoy playing for San Francisco because he believes they will contend for a Super Bowl for the next few years.
San Francisco believes the asking price is too high for Revis. Both the contract and draft-pick compensation are too much for the cornerback that might not fit their team mold. Another hurdle is the fact that Revis is coming off of a season-ending ACL injury. He is currently recovering from surgery to repair the ligament and doctors have come out and said he is ahead of his original recovery schedule.
Revis came out earlier in the week saying that the trade rumors coming from the Jets have hurt him a bit.
"This definitely hit home, especially being one of the best players out there and come to find out you're being shopped. Yeah, it really hit home, but my focus is, it doesn't matter where I'm at. I know what I can do," Revis said.
The Jets have not come out and confirmed that they were attempting to trade Revis during the NFL combine, but coach Rex Ryan has said that no player is safe from a trade if it helps the team get better. Revis is reportedly seeking about $16 million in salary per year. He is considered the top player on the Jets roster so they have to make a decision on whether or not they will resign him. The team will most likely wait and see how Revis healed from the surgery before making a decision.
