While talk has been rife about a sensational return for a certain Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United, a player who was as revered by his own English Premier League club could be set for a comeback, if reports in Spain are to be believed.
Liverpool are plotting a summer move for former favorite Xabi Alonso as the Spanish international continues to stall on talks over a new contract with Real Madrid.
Alonso had a successful five-year spell at Anfield, which included that amazing Champions League triumph in 2005.
The 31-year-old is one of the most important players in the Real squad at the moment, but with questions about the future of Jose Mourinho and Ronaldo looming large, Alonso is also reportedly considering his own future.
While Alonso does not exactly fit the bill of Liverpool owners FSG's blueprint of bringing in young players with sell-on value, manager Brendan Rodgers has reportedly made enquiries about Alonso's availability.
Alonso, himself, has always said he would love to return to Liverpool one day, and with his style of play not really requiring much pace, age should not really be much of a problem.
Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has revealed marking Luis Suarez is as difficult as stopping Lionel Messi, even if you know exactly what he is going to attempt to do.
"I tell (Luis) all the time that he always does the same thing -- he tries to do nutmegs," Enrique told the club's official website. "It's always 'megs, 'megs, 'megs. And you just know that he is going to do it but you can't stop him.
"When you know someone, you can know what they are going to do but he's still a very difficult player to train against.
"He scores so many goals in training. It's like with Messi -- everyone says he is going to cut inside all the time.
"And you know that he is going to do this but you can't stop him from cutting inside and scoring goals. With Luis (and nutmegs) it's the same. Of course there are some differences between the two players.
"Luis is a great all-round striker but it's not just about the goals, it's about what he gives to the team -- it's about his personality and his attitude.
"He's the same in training as what you see in games. He gives 100 percent all the time. He never misses training and, touch wood, he has not been injured so far.
"It's amazing, of course, how he scores goals and some of the goals he has scored have been incredible."
