The Calgary Flames begin a back-to-back series with the Los Angeles Kings. This is the second meeting between the two teams. The Kings won the first matchup 3-1. Both teams are coming off of losses and in need of a win in order to solidify a playoff spot.
If Calgary has any hope of making the postseason, they will need to start putting together some wins. Friday's shutout against the Anaheim Ducks does not help their efforts. The Flames have gone 4-1-1 in their last six games and have scored four goals in their previous three games. Captain Jarome Iginla had four goals and an assist during a three-game point streak that has come to and end. He will be crucial in a potential playoff push. Goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff game up four games in the loss the Anaheim after making 32 saves against San Jose on Wednesday. He missed over a month due to a sprained MCL but it is unclear if he will get the back-to-back-back start. Giving up five goals on 24 shots is not the best intro back into the season.
The issue with the Kings is surprisingly in their goaltending. Both Jonathan Quick and backup Jonathan Bernier have struggled this season. Los Angeles have allowed at least four goals three times while splitting its last four contests. Quick is just 7-7-2 on the season, with a 2.59 goals-against average after posting a career best 1.95 GAA in 2011-12. He has allowed four goals in his last two starts. Jeff Carter has been carrying the offense for the Kings. He is among the NHL leaders with 16 goals and has 12 in his last 12 games. The Kings will continue to be without defenseman Matt Greene and Willie Mitchell who are unlikely to return for the remainder of the season.
