The Minnesota Vikings made one of the most stunning trades of the offseason when they sent wide receiver Percy Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks for drafts picks and now the team is in desperate need of another option and they could turn to free agents Wes Welker, Greg Jennings or Danny Amendola.
According to ESPN.com, Harvin was traded to the Seahawks for a first-round pick and two other picks, although the deal still hinges on a physical and a contract extension for the receiver. The deal came just before another trade, as the San Francisco 49ers acquired Anquan Boldin from the Baltimore Ravens for a sixth round pick after the receiver did not want to take a pay cut.
The trades will become official at 4 pm on Tuesday when the league year begins and gives the Seahawks another electric receiver to add to the offense with Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch.
"The best all around player I ever seen or you'll ever see! Goes to Seattle! I feel like I just got kicked in the stomach. Several times!!!," wrote Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. "I wish my boy Percy nothing but success! God bless you homie."
The Vikings and general manager Rick Spielman said continuously through the offseason that they would not be trading Harvin, but things changed when the Seahawks made a valued offer for the receiver. Harvin was entering the final year of his contract and was expecting to be paid like a number one receiver.
The 24-year-old is one of the most dynamic players in the NFL and now the Vikings have a huge hole to fill. Harvin had 62 catches for 677 yards to lead the team despite missing time with injuries and he has 29 touchdowns in his career, with 20 receiving, five return and four rushing.
The Vikings now will have to replace that production and the best way could be to sign one of the trhee top free agent options in Mike Wallace Wes Welker and Danny Amendola, or someone a bit less talented like Greg Jennings. Welker could provide a similar position to Harvin, although his speed is not the same.
Welker had 118 catches last season and could give Christian Ponder the target he needs on the field. Amendola also could provide that type of production, as he had 63 receptions for 666 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games after getting injured. Wallace would be able to replicate the speed, but all reports say that Wallace is heading to Miami.
Jennings could be a solid addition if they do not get one of the top receivers and he is familiar with the team after playing them in the division for a number of years.
