The Detroit Red Wings begin a three game road trip which sees the team playing the next seven of eight games away from home. They face a struggling Calgary Flames team that is coming off of back-to-back losses to the Los Angeles Kings. Both teams should be happy to be facing a new opponent as the Red Wings were just swept in a back-to-back series with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Detroit's two straight losses come after a 5-1-1 run that saw a resurgence in the team. The Red Wings have yet to find a power-play goal on the road. They rank near the top of the league in converting the power-play at home at 22.1 percent, but is 0 for 36 on the road while going 3-5-2. The 10-game road drought without a power-play goal is equal to the 2000-01 Minnesota Wild. The Red Wings will continue to try different player combinations until they figure out a way to score. They are hoping to hand the Flames their season-high fourth straight loss. Henrick Zetterberg has been struggling with only one goal in the past 19 games.
The Flames have killed 14 of 15 power plays at home so their chances at topping the Red Wings are high. Calgary owns a 16-8 scoring advantage while winning their last four home games. However, they were outscored 13-3 while losing at Anaheim and two straight to the Kings. Calgary has a Western Conference-low 22 points and need to find a sense of urgency to rebound. They must avoid a fourth straight year without a playoff appearance. Mikael Backlund has two goals in the past three games and will hope to get the team on track for a late season push.
