San Francisco has spent much of the offseason attempting to upgrade their defense that ultimately cost them a Super Bowl last season. After releasing safety Dashon Goldson to free agency, the team had to make some upgrades. Defensive end Glenn Dorsey officially signed a two-year deal with the 49ers on Wednesday and now the team is meeting with defensive back Charles Woodson who could sign with team soon.
The signing of ex-Kansas City Chief Dorsey is a big get for the 49ers. Dorsey's deal is rumored to be worth upwards of $7 million a year in salary plus incentives. Dorsey will bring a lot of versatility to the 49ers' defense with his size and speed. The former first-round pick did spend almost the entire 2012 season on injured reserve. He sustained a left calf injury in September that ended up sidelining him for the entire year. Fully healed, a fresh start out West could be what Dorsey needs to be productive again.
The 49ers will attempt to sign another big defensive star in Woodson sometime this week. The team is hosting the defensive back in an effort to persuade him to move out to San Francisco. The 36-year old was released by the Green Bay Packers in a salary-cutting move mid-February. He still had two years remaining on his contract. Woodson does have a slight connect to the 49ers, he and head coach Jim Harbaugh were both stars at the University of Michigan.
Woodson was not cut for his lack of production. In a career that began in 1998, he still produces numbers. While he spent much of last season injured, he did have seven interceptions and 62 total tackles in 2011. Woodson is familiar with Northern California. His NFL career began with the Oakland Raiders where he was drafted No.4 overall and spent eight years before leaving for Green Bay.
When the eight-time Pro Bowler was released, he expressed interest in signing with a team set to win a Super Bowl. Having just been there, the 49ers would be the perfect landing spot. Recovering from a broken collarbone, if Woodson can stay healthy, he could be a strong fit for San Francisco.
