Europa League Results: Spurs Survive Inter Milan Scare; Torres Scores as Chelsea Advance Along with Newcastle

Tottenham survived by the skin of their teeth, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Europa League on the away goals rule against Inter Milan, while Chelsea, Lazio, Newcastle, Rubin Kazan, Benfica, Basel and Fenerbahce also made it through.

Spurs were expected to cruise into the last-eight following their 3-0 win over the Italians in the first leg at White Hart Lane, but the game at the San Siro did not quite go according to plan.

Goals from Antonio Cassano, Rodrigo Palacio and a William Gallas own goal forced the game into extra time, with the aggregate scores tied 3-3.

However, an early strike from Emmanuel Adebayor, who was subjected to racist abuse, in the extra period meant Inter needed two more goals to advance, with the Italians only managing one more through Ricky Alvarez.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea striker Fernando Torres finally got on the scoresheet -- although he did miss a penalty as well -- as the European champions booked themselves a place in the quarters with a 3-1 win in the second leg against Steaua Bucharest and go through 3-2 on aggregate.

Steaua had gotten their hopes up of toppling the mighty Chelsea following their first leg triumph, but it was Chelsea who levelled the proceedings with a strike from Juan Mata just past the half hour.

Steuau, however, got that crucial away goal on the stroke of halftime, with Vlad Chiriches scoring from close range off a corner, after Petr Cech had made an initial save.

Chelsea now needed two goals to advance, and their skipper John Terry came to the party, powering home a header off a Mata freekick in the 58th minute.

Mata was again the architect of the third goal, with the Spanish playmaker playing in Torres, who made no mistake in slotting it into the bottom corner with 20 minutes remaining.

The tie could have been put to bed had Torres slotted a penalty, earned by Hazard, but the former Liverpool man struck his spotkick onto the crossbar. It did not matter too much in the end, however, as Chelsea held on to enter the quarterfinals.

At St James' Park, Papiss Cisse popped up with the winner in stoppage time for the second straight game, netting the only goal against 10-man Anzhi Makhachkala to give Newcastle a 1-0 aggregate victory.

Anzhi had to play with a man down from early in the second half, after Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez was sent off for picking up two quickfire yellow cards. Newcastle, who had been second best until then, took full advantage, with Cisse getting on the end of a Sylvain Marveaux assist in the fourth minute of stoppage time to send the Magpies into seventh heaven.

Results (all aggregate scores): Rubin Kazan 2-0 Levante; Zenit St. Petersburg 1-2 Basel; Inter Milan 4-4 Tottenham (Spurs go through on away goals); Chelsea 3-2 Steaua; Fenebahce 2-1 Viktoria Plzen; Bordeaux 2-4 Benfica; Newcastle 1-0 Anzhi; Lazio 5-1 Stuttgart.
