The New York Jets have done more subtraction than addition so far during the free agency period. Already the team has let go of starters like Mike DeVito, LaRon Landry and Dustin Keller. They are in need of a signing, any signing to get fans excited. With their offense currently in limbo with the unknown quarterback situation, the signing of a quality running back could help to get some stability. The Jets are rumored to be close to signing free agent Mike Goodson to replace Shonn Greene.
While it is not a blockbuster signing, Goodson would offer some kind of excitement for fans. The former Oakland Raiders back is known for his toughness running into contact and his breakaway speed. He would be very similar to Greene. Goodson rushed for 221 yards on 35 carriers, but did not have any touchdowns. Goodson was not the starting back in Oakland, he shared the carries with Darren McFadden who was the primary running back.
Goodson did show signs of starting abilities during his time in Carolina where his career began. He rushed for 772 yards and three touchdowns in 2010. He comes with versatility garnering plenty of reception yards. In 2012, he had 16 catches for 195 yards and one touchdown. He also spent time as a kick returner, registering 359 yards in 16 return attempts.
Goodson is familiar with the East Coast so the transition would not be difficult. He is a New Jersey native. Goodson would be effective on third down plays and short yardage situations. He certainly does not equal Greene. Last season, Greene rushed for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns. The Jets just need to make a move to get fans believing in the team a bit. Goodson will offer some quality when paired with another running back. The Jets are expected sign him to a deal as soon as possible.
