With Newcastle going clear of the relegation battle following a good run, Wigan will be desperate to get one over the Magpies when the two sides meet in their English Premier League game Sunday.

Wigan are currently third bottom on 24 points, six behind Aston Villa, who are 17th. Wigan, though, do have a couple of games in hand, including the one on Sunday, and Roberto Martinez's men will be keen to take advantage of that situation.

The Latics pulled off an impressive 3-0 win over Everton in the F.A. Cup quarterfinals last weekend to book a semi-final date at Wembley, and if they show similar form against Newcastle, then another victory might be on hand.

"On Sunday we face a big battle against ourselves in truth," Martinez said. "We need to improve on what we've been doing defensively recently and this is an opportunity to show how we can adapt and improve upon what we've done.

"We need to be more solid at home than we have been recently, and I think that will be the difference between us coming away with a positive result or not. I think one result will prove to be a springboard for future home games for the remainder of the season.

"We had a similar situation against Stoke City last season, when up to that point we had produced good performances but hadn't been able to affect both penalty areas enough. On the day we found our rhythm and a way of performing that set the tone for every single game we had left in the campaign.

"We're looking forward to trying to recreate that feeling and play out the best performance possible."

Wigan forward Callum McManaman is a doubt for the game at the DW Stadium, while Ryo Miyaichi has been ruled out for what looks like the rest of the season.

Newcastle will also have to do without influential playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa this year, with the French international set to undergo surgery on his hamstring. Yohan Cabaye is a slight doubt after picking up a knock in the Europa League game against Anzhi Makhachkala Thursday.
