NFL Free Agency Signings: Indianapolis Colts Sign Veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck To Backup Starter Andrew Luck

Mar 19, 2013 01:23 PM EDT

Veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck didn't take long to find a new team, as the Indianapolis Colts have announced the signing of the aging vet Tuesday.

The news comes as a fascinating development for Hasselbeck, who was released by the Titans earlier on Monday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news via Twitter.

Hasselbeck, 37, will play backup to Andrew Luck, which is more opportune for Indy as they were looking for a veteran backup after Drew Stanton left for Arizona.

"His body of work, intangibles, and extensive league experience speak for themselves. Those factors, plus his familiarity with our offensive scheme, will make him a great asset to our team and its vision as we move forward," Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said in a statement.

Hasselbeck will turn 38 in September, and despite a less-than-impressive 2012 season with the franchise, he boasts a solid resume that has no doubt led to interest from the Colts.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Hasselbeck spent two seasons with the Titans. After throwing for 3,571 yards in 2011, he was the backup to Locker last season.

In 14 seasons, Hasselbeck has thrown for 34,517 yards with 201 touchdowns and 147 interceptions.

No information is known on what the Colts will offer Hasselbeck in terms of a contract, though it will probably be less than the $7.5 million he was scheduled to make with Tennessee this season.
