The Chicago Bears are still active in the free agent market as they figure low cost options to upgrade their defense. The Bears defense ranked in the top 10 in most defensive categories but a few players are getting older and the team is looking to add talented youth. While the Bears have yet to make a decision on veteran Brian Urlacher, they are interested in signing safety Tom Zbikowski.
Team president Ted Phillips has expressed desire in re-signing Urlacher prior to the start of the season. The linebacker has spent his entire career with the team and Phillips wants him to retire as a member of the Bears. While it may look like the team is showing no urgency in handling Urlacher's contract, Phillips insists they are not slighting him in any way.
There are teams interested in Urlacher if Chicago is unable to re-sign him. The Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys have looked closely at the future Hall of Fame player. Urlacher is the last remaining marquee player the Bears have to worry about bringing back. Considered a leader on defense, he has been hampered by injuries in recent years but still remains a valuable asset to the unit. As each day goes by with Urlacher remaining unsigned, the more it looks like he will not play with the Bears next season. While they determine what to do with Urlacher, they look towards adding youth.
Zbikowski was drafted in 2008 by the Baltimore Ravens and saw the most playing time as a member of special teams. He later moved on to defensive unit, working and learning under Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. He was then traded to the Indianapolis Colts. He played 11 games last season, all as a starter. He racked up 38 tackles, one interception and one sack before entering free agency.
Zbikowski would have a hard time working in as a starter on defense. The team already has Major Wright and Chris Conte set as the starting safeties for next year. They could use Zbikowski to add some depth at the position and be a decent substitute. As the Bears continue to add other players onto the defense, it could mean they are preparing to move on without veteran Urlacher.
