Luis Suarez admitted he could leave Liverpool, if a better prospective club came along which could provide him with the chance to play in a better European competition.
Suarez is having an outstanding season for the Reds, and is one of the leading candidates for the PFA Player of the Year award.
The Uruguayan international has almost single-handedly kept Liverpool in the top half of the table and in contention for a place in Europe next season - although those chances were seriously dashed following the team's abject loss to Southampton at the weekend.
Speculation has continued over Suarez's future as Liverpool look like missing out on the Champions League yet again with Bayern Munich and Juventus showing a keen interest.
Suarez has always said he is extremely happy at Anfield, but admitted the prospect of playing in Europe's elite competition could tempt him towards a move.
"You never know in football," Suarez told AFP when asked if he could leave Liverpool at the end of the season. "A player's ambition is always there, the ambition of wanting to play in elite teams is always there.
"I'm in a world-class team, an elite team like Liverpool. And if another team comes around with more prospects of competing in international club competitions games, which is willing to have (me), they are welcome.
"We would talk to the club, we would see if I want to go, if I don't want to go."
Liverpool of course will not let go of their player without a fight, but the chances of holding onto a striker of Suarez's caliber will decrease considerably without the prospect of playing in Europe next season.
The Reds managing director Ian Ayre insisted the club had no intention of selling Suarez, while adding the comments might have been lost in translation.
"You can read into the comments -- it was given in his native language so I think maybe it was a bit lost in translation," Ayre told BBC Radio Five Live.
"We've been consistent with Luis. Last summer he signed a new four-year contract and we have no desire to sell Luis. He is a fantastic player and a great contributor to our team.
"We've been very honest with him and he's been very honest with us."
