Eric Selleck, rookie left wing of the Florida Panthers, has been suspended two games without pay for instigating a fight in his NHL debut against the Carolina Hurricane.
Oh, can't forget to mention, he lost the fight.
Called up from the San Antonio Rampage to add toughness, Selleck came off the bench to fight Carolina forward Kevin Westgarth with 2:58 remaining in the Panthers' 4-1 win Tuesday night.
His action was a direct violation of league rule 70.2, which opens players who leave the bench to start a fight to be disciplined.
That triggered an automatic one-game suspension as announced by the NHL on Wednesday. The second suspension was due to the fact that he left the bench during a legal line change.
Westgarth, who you can say is the victim of all this, dropped Selleck to the ice with just two ferocious uppercuts to the head.
Selleck will have lose a total of $5,945.94 for his actions, which will be donated to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund, and will miss Thursday night's game against the New York Rangers and Saturday's game against the New Jersey Devils. The next game he'll be eligible to play in will be Sunday's game against the New York Islanders.
