England will expect a comfortable outing, but will be wary of complacency when they take on minnows San Marino in the World Cup Qualifiers Friday.

England are currently two points behind Group H leaders Montenegro, who they face on Tuesday, and know nothing but three points will do against San Marino if they are to keep their chances of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil alive.

"We do understand who we are up against," England skipper Steven Gerrard said. "On paper we are stronger than the opposition. But sometimes when you play these teams, they cause different problems.

"It becomes an attack versus defense game, they try and slow the game down, commit fouls, will try and slow us down because we like to play at a fast tempo.

"I'm sure their plan will stay the same for 90 minutes. It certainly did at Wembley, to try to keep the score down, and we are expecting the same again.

"We need to show the same levels of professionalism and same intensity to get that breakthrough as soon as possible.

"The longer the game goes on at nil-nil, it gets a bit edgy.

"I'm sure the pitch will have a few issues as well but, if we approach it professionally and near the level we can play, it should be enough to get the three points."

England have had a lot of problems leading up to the double header, with several players withdrawing due to injury, although Rio Ferdinand made all the headlines by opting out of the squad.

"It might have been naive but I always believed people who are selected are going to want to be there and don't need to be told in advance," England manager Roy Hodgson said.

"There are occasions when I communicate with players I'm leaving out, especially if they've been in before and I want to put someone fresh in.

"I wouldn't do anything differently. I don't know what I can do differently. I was disappointed, and I made this very clear, that Rio was not able to accept the invitation."
