The sports network ESPN fired the writer who wrote "chink in the armor" in the headline about Jeremy Lin and suspended a television anchor who used the same phrase on air. ESPN apologized for the offending headline to Lin who brushed off the racist remark.
"They've apologized and so from my end, I don't care anymore," Lin told reporters Sunday after the triumphal game at the Madison Garden against Mavericks.
"You have to learn to forgive, and I don't even think that was intentional," he said.
On Wednesday, ESPN anchor Max Bretos used the slur when he asked Knicks Walt "Clyde" Frazier about Lin.
"If there is a chink in the armor, where can he improve his game?" Bretos asked. He was suspended for 30 days for using the words that went unnoticed at the time.
Bretos tweeted his apologies Saturday, saying he did not mean to make a pun and he would try hard to avoid making the mistake again.
"Chink in the Armor: Jeremy Lin's 9 Turnovers Cost Knicks in Streak-stopping Loss to Hornets" appeared on ESPN's mobile web site at 2:30 a.m. Saturday. It was removed by 3:05 a.m., according to ESPN.
ESPN apologized in a statement for the "offensive and inappropriate comments."
"We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin," ESPN said Sunday. "His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN."
On Sunday, Lin led Knicks to their eight win in nine games by scoring 28 points and making a career-high 14 assists in a 104-97 victory against the champion Dallas Mavericks.
