Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano got into it after some rough racing last week in Bristol and things continued on Sunday, as the two battled down the stretch on the final lap in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at California before spinning out and crashing after some contact.
The two were neck and neck heading around the final lap and as they made it around turn three, Logano his Hamlin slightly and knocked him into the wall, while he was able to finish third behind Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr., who were able to sneak by the crash without any incident. Following the race, Tony Stewart went after Logano and got into a shoving match, the second time in two weeks that has happened to the 22-year-old driver.
Hamlin was airlifted away from the track after being able to get out of his car on his own and the last lap made it one of the most exciting races of the season. Stewart took offense to Logano blocking him out of one of the late restarts and he went after him following the race, which happened with Hamlin and Logano one week earlier.
The final lap had all the intrigue NASCAR could want, as the two rivals continued their battle from last week at Bristol, which saw Hamlin spin out Logano while he was leading the race. Logano pulled a similar move this time, although it appeared as if the crash was incidental, as the two were racing to the finish line. Following the race at Bristol, Logano ran over to Hamlin's car and had a loud exchange before some shoving ensued.
Hamlin took the worst of the crash, hitting the wall after the contact and although he was able to get out of the car on his own, he needed medical attention and was flown out due to bad traffic in the area, NASCAR did not release any new information on Hamlin's condition and all that was known was that Hamlin would be staying overnight in the hospital.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. made a move at the end as the two crashed and came in second, which put him into first place in the Sprint Cup standings. Earlier in the week, Hamlin apologized for what happened at Bristol and said he bumped Logano too hard when he came behind him and for the incident after the race. It's unclear what Hamlin thought of the crash on Sunday, but the video showed that the two were racing and the contact did not look to be on purpose by either driver.
