The Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl last season against the San Francisco 49ers, but the defense will look very different when they take the field next season, as the team lost a number of veteran players while bringing in new names like safety Michael Huff.
According to ESPN.com, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the team has come to an agreement with Huff on a three-year contract that is worth $6 million for the safety. The team needed another starter at the position after Ed Reed decided to leave and sign with the Houston Texans. The team also lost Bernard Pollard to the Titans and now adds the 29-year-old Huff to the mix.
Huff has been with the Raiders since being the seventh overall pick in 2006 and was released earlier in the month along with wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey. Huff has made 11 interceptions over his eight years with the league and has 5.5 sacks with four forced fumbles. He ws set to make a $4 million roster bonus, which is why the Raiders cut him.
The Dallas Cowboys had made a play for the former Texas Longhorns safety, but with their financial situation there was a chance a deal could take a while. The signing off Huff is the second deal of the week for the Ravens, as they also signed Pro Bowl linebacker Elvis Dumervil after his fax fiasco with the Broncos.
Dumervil is a huge grab by the Ravens, as they have lost a number of players from their Super Bowl tea, including Anquan Boldin, Paul Kruger and Dannell Ellerbe. The signing of Huff leaves Charles Woodson as the biggest name at safety on the market and he has interest from the San Francisco 49ers, who lost starter Dashon Goldson to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
