With the NHL deadline approaching, the Calgary Flames decided to trade longtime star Jarome Iginla to the Pittsburgh Penguins, ending a nearly two-decade run with the team.
According to ESPN.com, TSN reported on Wednesday that the Flames traded Iginla to Boston after also having Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks in the running for the deal. The Boston deal did not go through and Iginla will be a Penguin.
Iginla has played for the Flames for 16 seasons, but his contract is set to expire after this season and with the team stuck in the bottom of the Western Conference, they decided to give him another chance for a Stanley Cup.
Iginla is one of the most respected players in the NHL, but the Flames have never been able to be consistently good, as they are likely to miss the playoffs for the fourth year in a row. Iginla had a nearly- 450-consecutive games played streak that lasted from 2007 and this season he had scored nine goals with 13 assists.
Neither the Flames or the Bruins confirmed the deal at the time, but Iginla was scratched from the starting lineup for Wednesday's game. UPDATE: The trade went to the Penguins after falling through with Boston. Iginla has scored 525 goals and 570 assists in over 1,200 games played, all for the Flames. The team is currently in 14th place in the West and has gone 13-15-4 with 30 points during the lockout shortened season.
