Jacksonville Jaguars Draft Rumors: Geno Smith Target Over Matt Flynn Trade? Team Explores Options for Quarterback

The Jacksonville Jaguars sit in a position where they can essentially determine the top-10 draft picks for each team. The Jaguars have reportedly been seeking to add a quarterback to the roster in order to increase competition for current starter, Blaine Gabbert. The team could trade for someone or they could draft. Their decision could impact what other teams do on draft day. While they have been heavily interested in draft prospect Geno Smith, the team did explore trade options to get Seattle Seahawks' quarterback, Matt Flynn.

Flynn has had his name thrown around in numerous trade rumors. While once considered to be the future of the Seattle Seahawks, the team has moved on with Russell Wilson as their starter, leaving Flynn in the backup role. They originally said they were not interested in trading Flynn, but this is the NFL and those statements almost never prove to be true.

Flynn signed a three-year, $19.5 million deal with the Seashawks after being a backup to Aaron Rodgers. He played one game, throwing for six touchdowns and 480 yards. However, the team went with Wilson as the starter and has yet to look back.

The Jaguars are in desperate need of a quarterback upgrade and originally thought Flynn might be the guy, however they have yet to pull the trigger. The biggest hit against Flynn is his salary cap numbers. He would be a $7.25 million hit in 2013 and $8.25 in 2014. He has less game time experience than Gabbert and the other quarterback, Chad Henne. Gabbert has struggled since becoming a starter. He has only won the team seven games over the past two seasons, throwing for a total of 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

With Flynn slowly moving out of the picture, Geno Smith slowly moves in. The Jaguars draft No. 2 overall and have the best shot at landing the West Virginia quarterback. He could be a valid option for the Jaguars, but might not have the potential to start right away.

It is likely the Jaguars will decide to build the rest of their team through the draft. They could easily make a last minute move to get Flynn, but all signs point towards Smith holding up the Jaguars jersey on draft day.
