Before became an unrestricted free agent on July 1, center Mikhail Grabovski signed a new five-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs that will pay an average of $5.5 million per season for a total of $27.5 million over the five years.
"We are extremely pleased to have Mikhail under contract for the next five seasons," Maple Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke said on Tuesday about the deal. "His speed and skill are valuable commodities and fit perfectly with our style of play. He leads by example and his work ethic speaks for itself."
Grabovski, 28, who is making $3.1 million this season, scored 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points and has plus-seven rating and 19 penalty minutes in 59 games for the Maple Leafs this season.
"It's a nice feeling," said Grabovski. "You protect your life for five years. Right now you can concentrate on hockey. For sure inside you feel much better than (when) you don't have a contract."
The Minks, Belarus native Grabovski was selected by the Canadians in the fifth round of the 2004 NHL draft and has 82 goals and 113 assists for 195 points in 304 career games with the Leafs and Montreal Canadians.
