The NHL trade deadline arrives at 3 pm on Wednesday and a number of teams have already made their big moves, including the New York Rangers, who won the sweepstakes to get Ryane Clowe from the San Jose Sharks and the Boston Bruins, who acquired Jaromir Jagr from the Stars.
According to ESPN.com, there are some other big names that will likely be on the move, including Roberto Luongo and Miikka Kiprusoff, who are being targeted by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Flames already traded away Jarome Iginla and Jay Bouwmeester and if they deal Kiprusoff, the rebuilding will truly be on.
Other players that have already been dealt include Derek Roy, Jordan Leopold, Douglas Murray and Brenden Morrow, who is now a Penguin. The Rangers made a much needed move on Tuesday, bringing over Clowe for draft picks. The team dealt a second- and third-round pick in 2013, and a conditional second-rounder in 2014 for the forward, who despite not scoring any goals this season was one of the hottest names at the deadline.
The Rangers are ranked last in scoring and needed a boost of any kind and Clowe waived his no trade clause for the deal to go through and he is expected to play against the Penguins on Wednesday night. The 30-year-old brings a gritty style of play despite not scoring much and his demeanor is something the rangers have been lacking all season.
Clowe was choosing between Vancouver and the Rangers and eventually decided that Madison Square Garden was the place for him. He is on an expiring contract and while the team was looking at Dan Boyle on the Sharks, they felt the price was too high and they decided on Clowe instead.
The team is coming off of a 4-2 win against the Jets on Monday and is still in the eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoffs and Clowe is ninth on the Sharks' all-time points list with 271 points in over 420 games.
