NFL Free Agency Rumors: Baltimore Ravens Wanted Ed Reed Gone?

Apr 03, 2013 11:18 AM EDT

With Ed Reed's departure from the Baltimore Ravens to sign with the Houston Texans, it was believed that there was a bidding war for Reed's talents, but new rumors suggest that was not the case.

According to Mike Preston of The Baltimore Sun, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh wasn't that much interested in bringing the veteran defender back on the team's roster, despite all the speculation prior to Reed ending up in Houston.

I It was interesting to see how the national media made it seem like the Ravens were in a bidding war with Houston for former safety Ed Reed.

The Ravens made it appear that way out of respect for Reed, and it certainly put more money in Reed's pocket. But Ravens coach John Harbaugh wanted Reed back as much as he wants a root canal.

Reed signed with the Texans for a three-year, $15 million contract. The Ravens replaced him with the signing of Michael Huff to a deal for the same length of time, but managed to make him more affordable by paying him $9 million less.

Reed, 34, has played all 11 of his NFL seasons in Baltimore, where he's the franchise leader in interceptions with 61. His 1,541 return yards with those pickoffs is an NFL career record. He was the NFL defensive player of the year in 2004 and an eight-time All-Pro.

Reed has 14 career touchdowns, and is the only player in NFL history to score on a punt return, a blocked punt, an interception and a fumble recovery. He played in all 16 games during the 2012 regular season, finishing with 58 tackles and a team-high four interceptions.
