Darrelle Revis Trade Rumors: 'Not Optimistic' as New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Negotiate Draft Day Deal

Apr 06, 2013 10:45 AM EDT

The Darrelle Revis carousel continues. As the New York Jets appear desperate to get rid of their star cornerback, few teams have come calling for his services. Many believe the Jets' asking price is too high, leading any deals to go incomplete. Tampa Bay, at this point, is the main leader of the pack to get Revis, but like other teams, they are waiting for the Jets to change the trade terms. Revis himself admits that he is not optimistic that any trade will be complete this offseason.

If the Jets do not end up trading Revis after all of the hype and rumors this offseason, it is likely he will opt out of his contract at the end of the 2013-14 season. He will be a free agent and can get a deal he wants with a new team. Of course, the Jets could just offer Revis the extension he is searching for and keep him on the team. Revis reportedly would like to stay in New York and if the team would just give him what he wants, they could eliminate the trade headaches. But, the Jets are still trying to ship him off as trade talks between the team and the Buccaneers have stalled.

Things with the trade looked positive back in March, but hit a snag with the inconsistent trade package offered by the Jets. They continue to ask for Tampa Bay's first round pick this year while Tampa is only willing to offer a first-round pick in the 2014 draft. With Revis coming off of energy and the status of his health unknown, giving up a first-round pick may be too much.

A trade can still happen. If New York and Tampa are going to get this deal done, it will likely happen on draft day. The Buccaneers will select 13th overall. If there is no one on the board that Tampa sees fit to use a first-round pick on, they will trade it to the Jets and get Revis in return. The team is willing to give him the extension he wants. It all just depends on what the teams in front of them do in the draft.
