Arsenal are on alert after Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain refused to commit his future to the Spanish champions, while the English Premier League side are also reportedly closing in on the signing of QPR forward Loic Remy.
Arsene Wenger is keen to bring in a goalscoring forward to the Emirates for next season, and Higuain, despite his struggles this year, would be a perfect candidate.
The Argentine has been on the radar of Arsenal for quite a while now and Wenger will now be encouraged to make a move after Higuain hinted at a possible exit in the summer.
"I'm not going to talk about that now," he told Marca, when asked about his future with Real Madrid.
"I can only say that I'm committed to the club and will help the team until the end of the season."
Real are also looking at striking reinforcements in the summer, and one of Higuain or Karim Benzema is expected to leave at the end of the season to make way.
Arsenal are also interested in Stevan Jovetic of Fiorentina, and have made him the No.1 priority for the summer. The Montenegro international has reportedly agreed a move to the Emirates, but according to reports in Italy, the move hinges on Arsenal qualifying for the Champions League.
Higuain would cost Arsenal around the same as Jovetic with both players rated at £20-25 million ($30-38 million).
Meanwhile, the Gunners could make a move for Remy in the summer if Queens Park Rangers get relegated. QPR are currently seven points adrift of safety and are looking increasingly likely of being one of the three teams to be relegated this season in the English Premier League.
Remy had a release clause of £6 million ($9 million) inserted when he was bought from Marseille, with it applicable only if QPR get relegated.
Wenger is aware of that fact and after watching Remy take to life in the Premier League pretty well; he is seriously considering making a move at the end of the season.
While Remy is no doubt a good player, it can be questioned whether Arsenal need a player of the Frenchman's qualities. The Gunners already have plenty of similar forwards who can play across the frontline, and bringing in a pure center forward like Higuain might be the better option.
