The Oakland Raiders have dramatically improved their quarterback situation after last year and the team has some hope for the future as they try to clear cap space and aging veterans and the team took another step in that direction, as they are working to sign quarterback Seneca Wallace.
According to ESPN.com, Wallace beat out Tyler Thigpen as the option to be Matt Flynn's backup quarterback and they are expected to bring him in officially in the coming days. Both Wallace and Thigpen worked out after being considered for the Seahawks backup job, which was won by Brady Quinn who signed with the team. The Raiders have Terrelle Pryor and the newly acquired Matt Flynn for next season with the thought being that Flynn will start.
Wallace was with the Browns last year before being cut in camp and the Raiders wanted a veteran quarterback to get behind Pryor and Flynn in case of injuries and also for guidance. The move could mean that the team will not select a quarterback with the third pick in the draft as many felt they would, including names like Geno Smith and Ryan Nassib.
The Raiders had Carson Palmer last season, but traded him to the Cardinals after acquiring Flynn from the Seahawks. Although Flynn does not have much starting experience, he proved to be a capable quarterback in his chances and he should get his best shot to start while with the Raiders. The team finished just 4-12 last season and now that Flynn is in the fold the team is looking to improve.
Wallace is a solid backup option and he was a former fourth round pick with the Seahawks and has started 21 games in his career, way more than Flynn and Pryor combined. He made eight in 2008 and had over 1,500 yards and 11 touchdowns and Mike Holmgren loved him in Seattle and Cleveland. The team also signed Jaguars backup running back Rashad Jennings, who previously worked with Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson.
